"The Taming of the Shrew" by the director Staiko Murdjev, one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Bulgarian theatre, is a modern interpretation of Shakespeare's famous comedy. The modernization goes beyond the usual stage approach of updating classical works through modern costumes, set design, and music. The production touches on the current intellectual debate about differences (if there any) and the struggle (or lack thereof) between genders. Playful and dynamic, full of disguises, misunderstandings, and love, Murdjev's conception of the play is a giant, colourful, and energetically overflowing circus.
